European Hamster

Nature photographer Kerstin Hinze observed a family of Common Hamsters at their den. Formerly Common Hamsters have been quite common and not very popular at the farmers because they stored part of the cereal crop. Those times are gone and especially modern farming is responsible for the decrease of Hamsters. The change from summer grain to winter crop, usage of pesticides and fieldwork with very big and efficient machines makes it very difficult for Hamsters to survive. Source: Deutsche Wildtier Stiftung

Wildlife in the city

Wild animals are gaining ground. Everywhere in Germany wild boar, red foxes, raccoons and other wild animals are conquering the cities. More and more wild animals are attracted by the human vicinity. The larger a city, the more manifold is its wildlife. Average more than 10,000 different species are living in an European metropolis. Wildlife especially loves Berlin – the German capital is also the European capital of the animals. In Berlin are living estimated 20,000 different plant and animal species. Human and animal

For centuries humans have caused wild animals to become domestic animals. Long ago tamed animals have just been helpers during the hunt or sources of meat. Today pets are often full-value members of the family.

European beaver

We have received pictures of a beaver family from Rosenheim (Bavaria, Germany) taken by German photographers. The photographers, Bettina and Christian Kutschenreiter, have been able to have an friendly relationship, nearly a friendship, with a family of wild beavers. Through daily visits within two years, the beavers got used to the photographers. They were able to approach the animals on a very short distance, were even allowed to pet them! The images show behaviors of wild beavers never before seen and documented. Highly unusual are the pictures of beavers in snow and ice. In hard winters the keep open an exit in the ice that enables them foraging at the river bank. Equally unusual are the pictures of beavers and fish (chub). The beaver stir up a lot of mud, in which the chubs seem to find food. Sometimes the beaver are surrounded by a swarm of chubs.

Endangered paradise - The Great Barrier Reef

Endangered paradise - The Great Barrier Reef it\'s about 2000 kilometers long and 380 kilometers wide, in front of the eastern coast of Australia is the biggest and best protected coral reef worldwide. Pollution and climate change afflict this complex ecological system. Scientists have identified three reasons for the die back of the corals. The warming of the oceans is responsible for about ten percent of the reduction. About the half is caused by heavy storms the scientists found out. Another 40 percent of the dying can be traced back to the Crown-of-thorns Starfish which eat the corals and reproduce explosively from time to time.
